Contaminated land

Find out what contaminated land is and how to get a contamination check.

Contaminated land and what you need to know

Contaminated land can be harmful to people who live on it or use it. Because of this, more people are now checking if a property they want to buy or sell is on contaminated land.

How to check if land is contaminated

There are websites that offer land contamination checks, but they often give general results that might not be specific to the property you're interested in.

We offer a more detailed environmental search for a fee. We’ll tell you if we have any records of contamination or past land uses that might be a concern.

Public Register of contaminated land

We keep a public record (called a register) of any land in the Norwich city area that has been officially cleaned up due to contamination. This is required by law (Section 78R of the Environmental Protection Act 1990).

This register includes:

  • notices and appeals about cleaning up land
  • official statements and records of cleanup
  • legal actions and guidance related to contamination
  • important: this register only shows land that has been officially declared contaminated and cleaned up. It does not list all old industrial sites or land currently being investigated.

Right now, there are no entries in the register - no land has been officially declared contaminated in Norwich so far.
