To help keep our air clean, Norwich has three Smoke Control Areas:

  • King Street
  • Norwich Airport
  • Bowthorpe

What is a Smoke Control Area?

Smoke Control Areas are created through Smoke Control Orders. These rules aim to reduce air pollution by limiting the use of solid fuel-burning fires (like coal or wood) in homes.

In a Smoke Control Area you may only use:

  • smokeless fuels
  • a smoke-free (exempt) appliance that is designed to burn fuel without producing smoke

When these areas were set up

  • King Street 1968
  • Norwich Airport and Bowthorpe 1972
