Bonfires at home are not illegal, but they must not cause a nuisance (for example, excessive smoke affecting neighbours).
If a neighbour’s bonfire is causing a problem, it’s best to speak to them first, as they may not be aware. If the issue continues, you can report it to us.
A bonfire may be considered a nuisance if it:
- Happens frequently
- Lasts for long periods
- Produces excessive smoke that affects others
It is also an offence to burn materials that create dark smoke, such as:
- Rubber
- Painted or treated wood
- Furniture
- Tyres
- Plastic
This form should not be used for:
- Noise complaints (use the noise reporting forms)
- Commercial or industrial smoke issues
- Emergency situations (contact the Fire Service or call 999)
Other situations:
- Smoke affecting road visibility: contact the police (101 or 999 in an emergency)
- Deliberate fires (arson): contact the police
