Housing help for ex-offenders

If you’ve left prison and need somewhere to live, there is help available.

What you can do

  • talk to us – we may be able to help with housing
  • apply as homeless by calling us on 0344 980 3333 – you can do this before or after release
  • speak to your probation officer – they can refer you to housing support

Places that can help

  • Nacro – helps with housing and advice for people with criminal records
  • Julian Support – supports people before and after prison with housing and other needs
  • Shelter – gives free advice on housing and homelessness 

Financial help

  • you might get help with rent through Universal Credit
  • some councils can help pay for deposits or rent in advance 

Before you leave prison

  • ask prison staff to contact the council’s housing team. You may get emergency housing if you’re vulnerable (e.g. health issues, young age, pregnant).
