Housing help for ex-offenders
If you’ve left prison and need somewhere to live, there is help available.
What you can do
- talk to us – we may be able to help with housing
- apply as homeless by calling us on 0344 980 3333 – you can do this before or after release
- speak to your probation officer – they can refer you to housing support
Places that can help
- Nacro – helps with housing and advice for people with criminal records
- Julian Support – supports people before and after prison with housing and other needs
- Shelter – gives free advice on housing and homelessness
Financial help
- you might get help with rent through Universal Credit
- some councils can help pay for deposits or rent in advance
Before you leave prison
- ask prison staff to contact the council’s housing team. You may get emergency housing if you’re vulnerable (e.g. health issues, young age, pregnant).
