Honorary Freedom of the City of Norwich

Each year, we shine a spotlight on those who’ve gone above and beyond to enrich our city - through culture, service, or community spirit. Discover how we honour these exceptional contributions with one of our most prestigious civic awards.

Celebrating extraordinary contributions to our city

The council is currently reviewing the Freedom of the City process and, with the exception of nominations already in progress, is not accepting any new submissions at this time.

The Honorary Freedom of the City is one of Norwich’s highest civic honours. It’s awarded to individuals or organisations who have made a remarkable impact on the life, culture, or spirit of our city.

Whether through arts, sports, public service, or community leadership, recipients of this honour have helped shape Norwich into the vibrant, inclusive place we’re proud to call home.

What is it?

This honorary title is a symbol of deep appreciation from the city. It doesn’t come with legal privileges, but it carries immense civic pride and historical significance.

The award is formally approved by the City Council and presented during a special ceremony, often held at iconic venues like:

  • the Guildhall
  • the Halls
  • City Hall’s Council Chamber

Each ceremony is presided over by the Lord Mayor of Norwich.

Who can be nominated?

Anyone can nominate a person or organisation for this honour - you don’t need to be part of the council or a civic group. Nominations are accepted year-round and reviewed by the council’s ruling party.

If you know someone who’s made a lasting difference to Norwich, this is your chance to help celebrate their legacy.
