Volunteering opportunities

One of the most important things you could do to support biodiversity in Norwich is volunteer your time. There are loads of groups across the city undertaking brilliant work to create and enhance spaces for nature that could do with your help! Not only will you be supporting exciting projects and nurturing our green spaces, but you’ll also benefit from the numerous physical and mental health benefits associated with spending time outside.

Norwich Fringe Project

Established in 1991 the Norwich Fringe Project works with volunteers, local communities and parish councils to look after the green spaces in and around Norwich. The Fringe Project look after a range of habitats and sites including woodlands, meadows, marshes, heathlands and ponds. Sites you might have heard of include Bowthorpe Marshes, Earlham Park Woods, and Kett’s Heights.

Take on a green space

Norwich has some amazing residents and community groups who volunteer their time to take on and improve green spaces in their neighbourhoods, making the spaces more valuable to biodiversity and more community-focused.

Norwich City Council is keen to help more groups who would like to do this. If you’re interesting in taking on a green space, find out more on our community gardens and spaces pages.

Outdoor Projects Network

Norwich has a wide range of community groups that work to create and deliver environmental neighbourhood projects that are based outdoors. To support these groups and the issues they face, the Council set up the Outdoor Projects Network as a means to bring the groups together and offer support.

These groups are generally geographically based and share similar aims and aspirations. There’s likely one near you that you can become involved in, supporting outdoor and environmental projects in your local area.

You can find out more about the Outdoor Projects Network and its various groups on LUMi website.

The Conservation Volunteers

The Conversation Volunteers (TCV) work with local communities to create, improve and care for green spaces. This can include local parks, community gardens, and even wetlands and woodlands.
