Dangerous wild animal licence

To keep a dangerous, wild, or exotic animal in Norwich, you must obtain a licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.

You must apply for a licence before acquiring the animal.

Regulated animals

A licence is required for most primates, wild cats, wild dogs, certain pigs (like wild boar), marsupials, and venomous snakes. This also includes cross-bred or hybrid animals depending on how close they are to their wild ancestor.

Key requirements

  • Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old and own/possess the premises where the animal will be kept.
  • Public Safety & Welfare: You must prove that the animal will be kept securely to prevent escape, and that its accommodation is appropriate in terms of space, temperature, and diet.
  • Inspections: The council will carry out an inspection of your property alongside a veterinarian before granting the licence.

Licence fee

The fee is currently £425 for a 2-year licence, and you will also need to arrange specialist third-party liability insurance
