Transfer of a premises licence

If you’re taking over a business with an existing premises licence, you’ll need to apply to have it transferred to you so the licence remains valid under new management.

If you’re taking over a business that already has a premises licence, you’ll need to apply to transfer that licence into your name (or your company’s name).

A premises licence can only be transferred to someone who will be able to use the premises for the activities the licence allows.

In most cases, yes - you should provide written consent from the existing licence holder.

If you can’t get their consent, you may still apply if you can show that:

  • you’ve taken all reasonable steps to obtain their permission, and
  • if you want the transfer to take effect immediately, you would be able to run the licensable activities at the premises during the 14‑day consultation period.
