Norwich City Council buys former bank building to support wider Anglia Square regeneration

Anglia Square

Norwich City Council has purchased the former Barclays bank building on the corner of Anglia Square from Abbey Memorials (Stonecraft) Limited to enable a more comprehensive and coordinated approach to the area’s regeneration.

The building was already subject to initial redevelopment plans by its previous owner to demolish and replace with homes. The council’s acquisition allows the site to be integrated into the broader Anglia Square redevelopment opportunity, which will deliver around 1,100 new homes alongside new retail, leisure, and community facilities.

Cllr Carli Harper, cabinet member for finance and major projects, said: “This former bank will now be included in the wider redevelopment approach. Its inclusion strengthens our ability to deliver a better place for local people in the new Anglia Square.”

Demolition plans for the building have been submitted to the council’s planning department to ensure practical alignment with the approved demolition programme for Anglia Square. While the building itself is not of individual historic or architectural significance, it sits within a conservation area, and its removal will be managed accordingly.

In due course, refreshed plans will be brought forward so that redevelopment of the bank site complements and enhances the wider regeneration of the area.
