The restoration of the historic bandstand in Chapelfield Gardens is now complete, following a major conservation project led by Norwich City Council and supported by a Heritage at Risk Grant from Historic England.
The bandstand, which was built around 1899, has long been a focal point for concerts, performances and community events in one of Norwich's most treasured open spaces. However, after more than a century of use, the structure was showing significant signs of age and required specialist restoration to preserve its historic character.
A detailed survey carried out in 2025 identified a range of repairs needed to secure the bandstand's future. Specialist conservation and landscape contractors, King and Company, have now completed the restoration, carefully repairing and refurbishing key features while protecting the structure's historic significance.
A significant piece of work has seen the top of the bandstand removed for repair and carefully reinstated. The bandstand will also be more accessible thanks to the addition of a circular ramp, and it is now equipped with electricity points and adjustable lighting for performers.
Chapelfield Gardens has been at the heart of Norwich life for more than 350 years. Formally laid out in 1746, it is the city's oldest surviving ornamental public park and continues to welcome residents and visitors throughout the year.
The restoration ensures the bandstand can continue to serve as a venue for community events, performances and celebrations, while preserving an important part of Norwich's heritage for future generations.
Planting will also be added around the bed of the bandstand over the next few weeks.
Councillor Toby Bolton, cabinet member for parks and open spaces, said:
"I am so glad that the Chapelfield Gardens bandstand, one of Norwich's most recognisable and cherished landmarks. Generations of residents and visitors have enjoyed performances and community events here, and we're delighted to see it restored to its former glory."
"This project not only preserves an important piece of our city's heritage but also ensures the bandstand can continue to play a central role in the cultural life of Norwich for many years to come. We're grateful to Historic England for supporting this important work."
The project also explored opportunities to increase community use of the bandstand, helping to ensure it remains a vibrant and active feature of Chapelfield Gardens for years to come. Anyone interested in booking the bandstand can do so by emailing events@norwich.gov.uk to discuss their request.
