Work to make City Hall more accessible, welcoming and inclusive will get underway this month.
Councillor Lucy Galvin, Leader of Norwich City Council, said:
“City Hall is the people’s place and we are at last taking steps to make it welcoming, inclusive and accessible to all. For the first time, everyone will be able to come in through the front door, using an architect designed glass ramp which will not detract from the façade.”
Willan Building Contactors Ltd, who were awarded the contract to carry out the accessibility work, will start in a few weeks with more details to follow nearer the time.
The work, which received planning consent earlier this year, are the first major changes to be made to the iconic façade of Grade II* listed building, and include:
- a new glazed access ramp to the front of City Hall
- a small internal access lift for wheelchair users
- new disabled changing spaces, baby changing space and extra toilet provision
- automation of doors
The council will also unveil wider plans later this year to make City Hall more open and flexible to the public and shovel ready for any outcome of Local Government Reorganisation.
Cllr Galvin added:
“We will be unveiling our long-awaited wider plans later this year to make City Hall a more modern, open and relevant public space to protect it for the future without compromising its Grade II* listed status.”
