Norwich marks the start of Armed Forces Week with flag-raising ceremony

Armed Forces Day Flag

The Lord Mayor and Sheriff of Norwich will represent the city in thanking the men and women who make up the armed forces at a flag-raising ceremony outside City Hall on Monday 22 June.

The annual Armed Forces Week celebrations begin with the Armed Forces Day flag being raised on buildings and landmarks across the country.

Members of the armed forces community, past and present, standard bearers and invited guests, will gather on St Peter's Street from 9.40am.

The Lord Mayor will give a short address, followed by prayers led by Rev Canon Edward Carter from St Peter Mancroft Church, ahead of the flag-raising ceremony.

The Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Karen Davis, said:

"Armed Forces Week is an opportunity to recognise and thank the men and women who serve, or have served, in our armed forces.

"The flag-raising ceremony is a proud tradition and a chance for our city to show its appreciation for the dedication, courage and commitment of service personnel, veterans, cadets and their families. We look forward to coming together as a community to mark the start of this important week."

Councillor Josh Worley-Smith, Norwich City Council's Armed Forces Champion, said:

"Norwich has a strong and longstanding connection with the armed forces community.

"Armed Forces Week gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution made by serving personnel, reservists, veterans and cadets, and to recognise the support provided by their families. Raising the Armed Forces Day flag is a visible demonstration of our gratitude and respect."
