Plans to create an all-weather football pitch and a sports hub for Sloughbottom Park have been given the green light by the council’s planning committee yesterday (12 March).

The decision means local youngsters have the potential to play 80 hours of soccer sessions per week compared to around six hours a week on a grass pitch.

Councillor Carli Harper, cabinet member for finance and major projects said:

“This is fantastic news for the people of Mile Cross which is one of the most deprived parts not only of Norwich but in the country.

“The decision will transform the opportunities of young people to play more football than they would have been able to do on a grass pitch. You never know where this could lead to – maybe Mile Cross could produce a Chris Sutton, Lauren Hemp or even a Messi!”

The decision also paves the way for the roll out of the wider £7.6m regeneration project of the park in Mile Cross.

The full regeneration project includes:

  1. All weather football pitch
  2. New Sports Hub with Changing Places Toilet
  3. Refurbishment of existing Pavilion to include café, public toilets, and community room
  4. destination Play Area
  5. BMX track improvements and modular storage
  6. car park, paths, signage, and lighting
  7. Repairs to Dolphin Path
