Nestled on Mousehold Heath, the Ralph Hale Mottram Memorial is a special tribute to one of Norwich’s most passionate champions - writer, civic leader, and heritage advocate Ralph Hale Mottram.

Mottram Memorial

Installed in 1972, the memorial was created to celebrate Mottram’s lifelong dedication to Norwich. He was not only a successful author - best known for The Spanish Farm trilogy inspired by his time in World War I - but also served as Lord Mayor of Norwich in 1953. He spent over 20 years helping protect the city’s historic buildings and green spaces through his work with the Norwich Society.

The memorial was designed by local sculptor David Holgate and features a plaque offering a stunning panoramic view of Norwich’s skyline. It highlights key landmarks and invites visitors to reflect on the city’s rich history and Mottram’s role in preserving it.

Mottram once said that Mousehold Heath belonged to “those who have the privilege of Norwich birth” - a sentiment that still resonates today. He lived in Eaton, wrote extensively about Norwich, and is buried at Rosary Cemetery.

This memorial stands as a lasting reminder of his love for the city and his efforts to protect its character for future generations.
