Volunteering and community involvement

Find out about ways to enjoy and support Norwich's green spaces - through gardening, conservation, or simply meeting others who care.

Volunteering

Norwich is a city where community spirit thrives, especially when it comes to protecting and enhancing our green spaces. Whether you're passionate about nature, community gardening, or simply want to meet like-minded people, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Join a Friends of the Park Group

Many of Norwich’s parks and open spaces are supported by dedicated “Friends of” groups - local volunteers who help care for and improve these cherished areas. These groups are open to everyone and offer a great way to:

  • connect with your community
  • support biodiversity and conservation
  • organise events and activities in your local park

Outdoor Projects Network

The Outdoor Projects Network brings together local groups working on outdoor and environmental projects across Norwich. These groups focus on:

  • community gardening
  • habitat restoration
  • nature-based education and engagement

The network provides a platform for collaboration, sharing resources, and learning from each other. Whether you're starting a new initiative or want to join an existing one, the network is a great place to begin.

Conservation and maintenance opportunities

If you enjoy hands-on work in nature, there are several ways to contribute to conservation and maintenance efforts:

  • Mousehold Heath Volunteers: join regular work parties to help manage Norwich’s largest nature reserve. Tasks include habitat restoration, litter picking, and path maintenance. Sessions run throughout the year and include refreshments.
  • Norwich Fringe Project: since 1991, this initiative has supported the care of woodlands, meadows, marshes, and more. Volunteers help with habitat management, construction, and general site care.
  • The Conservation Volunteers (TCV): TCV’s Norwich Environmental Action Team works across the city to improve green spaces. It’s a great way to learn new skills, stay active, and make a visible impact.

Why get involved?

Volunteering outdoors not only benefits the environment - it also supports your physical and mental wellbeing. Whether you have a few hours a month or want to commit more regularly, there’s a role for everyone.
