Article 4 directions in Conservation Areas

See which properties have extra planning rules (Article 4 Direction) and what guidance applies.

What is an article 4 direction?

  • Normally, permitted development rights allow you to make small changes, like change your windows or build a small extension, but a property with an article 4 direction limits what changes you can make to your property without planning permission.
  • The article 4 directions within conservation areas are in place to protect the character and appearance of an area.
  • If your property has an article 4 direction in place, you’ll need to apply for permission, even for small changes.

Where can these be found in Norwich?

These areas were chosen because of their special historic and architectural value.
