Appeal a planning decision

Find out how to appeal a planning decision, who can appeal, how to comment and where to check appeal updates.

How to appeal

If your planning application is refused or approved with conditions you think are unfair, you can appeal to the Planning Inspectorate.

Instructions are on the back of your decision notice or available at the Gov.uk website.

Only the person who made the application can appeal. Objectors or neighbours cannot appeal a decision.

Commenting on an appeal

If you live next to the property involved, or you commented on the original application, the council will notify you about the appeal. You can then send your comments directly to the Planning Inspectorate.

  • For householder, advertisement, or minor commercial appeals, there’s usually no chance to comment again during the appeal.
