Paving over front gardens

Find out if permssion is required to pave your front garden.

Paving over front gardens

If you're paving over more than five square metres of your front garden with non-porous materials like asphalt, you’ll need planning permission.

You don’t need permission for paving in other areas around your home unless your property is a flat, listed building, or in a conservation area.

In most parts of Norwich, the soil allows water to soak in easily, so permeable surfaces are preferred. Planning permission is unlikely to be granted for impermeable paving in these areas.

In areas with poor drainage (shown in red on the map), impermeable paving may be allowed.
