A bold new vision breathing life into a civic icon - where heritage meets innovation, and public space becomes a vibrant hub for community, culture, and connection.
Norwich’s historic Halls are undergoing a transformative £3.6 million upgrade, breathing new life into one of the city’s most iconic heritage venues. Thanks to Town Deal funding, this Grade I listed medieval friary - already the largest concert venue in Norwich - is being reimagined as a dynamic, multi-use cultural hub that will serve the city for generations to come.
The Halls will become a state-of-the-art performance and digital making space, unlocking new opportunities for artists, creators, and audiences. This investment positions Norwich to thrive in the fast-growing creative sector, attracting more events, visitors, and talent to the city.
Expect cutting-edge audio-visual equipment, improved lighting, and a complete redesign that enhances flow and accessibility. Whether you're attending a concert, conference, wedding, or community event, the experience will be smoother, more inclusive, and visually stunning.
The revamped venue will host a wider variety of cultural and community events, appealing to diverse audiences and fostering greater participation in the arts. From trade fairs to film sets, The Halls will be a flexible space that adapts to the needs of Norwich’s vibrant community.
Structural improvements - including work on the roof and stained glass windows - ensure the building’s long-term sustainability. At the same time, the project introduces modern features that make The Halls relevant to the next generation of creatives.
This project supports the city’s ambition to be creative, fair, liveable, connected, and dynamic. It’s not just about restoring a building—it’s about shaping a future where culture and community thrive together.
While The Halls are temporarily closed for refurbishment, the site remains a visual celebration of Norwich’s rich history. Local artist Ben Wilson’s vibrant illustrations on the hoardings tell the story of The Halls from the 14th century to today—offering a glimpse of the past while hinting at an exciting future.
