Apply for a proxy vote

Need someone to vote for you? If you can’t get to the polling station on election day, you can ask someone you trust to vote on your behalf.

Apply online to appoint a proxy vote

You can apply online to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf at your designated polling station.

You must first be registered to vote and have the permission of the person you want to appoint as your proxy. That person must also be registered to vote in the UK.

Apply for a proxy vote

Who can be your proxy?

They must:

  • be 18 or over and registered to vote
  • only be a proxy for up to 2 people (or 4 if 2 live overseas)
  • vote at your polling station or apply to vote by post.

ID requirements

Your proxy must bring their own photo ID (not yours).

Accepted ID includes:

  • passport or driving licence
  • Blue Badge
  • Older Person’s or Disabled Bus Pass
  • Voter Authority Certificate
  • Other accepted ID (expired ID is okay if the photo still looks like them)

If you want to appoint a temporary proxy to vote on your behalf in a specific election, are an overseas voter or a service voter, you can do this online.

Applications to appoint a permanent proxy must be made on a paper form - keep reading for more detail on paper applications.

As with registering to vote, we'll need to confirm your identity before we can process your postal vote application. You will need this information to complete the application:

  • the address where you are registered to vote
  • your National Insurance number or other identity documents, for example a passport
  • the specific date of the election or referendum you want to make a postal vote, if you only want a one-off postal vote

You’ll also need to upload a photo of your handwritten signature in black ink on plain white paper.

Appointing a proxy using a paper form

You can download a paper version of the different proxy applications.

You must complete the correct form when applying to vote by proxy; some of the reasons to appoint a proxy may need to be supported in your application, so it is important that you read all of the application form to ensure that it is completed correctly.

  • Email your completed form with any attachments to elections@norwich.gov.uk.
  • Or post your completed form to Elections Office, Norwich City Council, St Peters Street, Norwich, NR2 1NH.

Changing or cancelling

You can cancel or change your proxy vote by contacting us by email: elections@norwich.gov.uk or calling 0344 980 3333.

Important - the deadline for applications to vote by proxy is by 5pm, six working days before polling day. Postal proxy votes will need to be received at least a week before that.
