Register to vote

It’s quick, easy, and important. Registering to vote gives you the right to take part in elections - and it might even help improve your credit score.

Why register?

  • you need to be on the Electoral Register to vote.
  • It protects your right to vote, even if an election is called suddenly.
  • Being registered can help with credit checks.
  • You must update your details if you move house.

Who can register?

You can register if you:

  • live in the UK
  • are 16 or older(although you cannot vote until you are 18)
  • are a British, Irish, qualifying Commonwealth, or EU citizen
  • students can register at both their home and term-time addresses 

Checking you're registered to vote

You can contact us to check whether you are eligible to register to vote or if you are already registered to vote.

Qualifying Commonwealth Citizens

You are a qualifying Commonwealth citizen if you are a citizen of a Commonwealth nation and have been granted permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man, or if you do not require such permission.

Any type of permission to enter or stay is acceptable, whether indefinite, time-limited or conditional.

Qualifying European Union Citizens

If you are a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus or Malta, you are eligible to register to vote in all elections held in the UK. Further qualifying EU citizens are eligible to register to vote in local government elections only.

You are a qualifying EU citizen if you are:

  • a citizen of Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal or Spain
  • a citizen of any other EU member-state, and have been legally resident in the UK with no break since the UK left the EU on 31 December 2020.

Living abroad or in the armed forces?

  • British citizens abroad can vote in UK Parliamentary elections for up to 15 years.
  • service voters and Crown Servants posted overseas can vote in all elections.
  • Apply online or download the forms at GOV.UK.

Register types

There are two versions of the register:

  • Electoral Register – used for voting, jury service, and preventing fraud.
  • Open Register – available for general use (e.g. by businesses). You can opt out.
