Key responsibilities
- Climate response
- Lead the city’s climate strategy, championing net zero, biodiversity, and sustainability initiatives.
- Drive the council’s environmental strategy and green economy agenda.
- City operations
- Oversee waste and recycling, street cleansing, public realm activities, and car park management.
- Ensure services are high quality, cost-effective, and delivered in partnership with trading companies and contractors.
- Planning and development
- Lead local planning authority services, supporting development, businesses, and residents.
- Develop planning policies and strategies addressing environmental challenges while fostering economic growth.
- Preserve heritage through conservation, design, and landscape initiatives.
- Natural environment
- Protect and enhance parks, green spaces, trees, and waterways for recreation, biodiversity, and wellbeing.
- Advance sustainable transport and low-carbon mobility solutions.
- Regulatory services
- Provide leadership for public protection, licensing, and environmental health.
- Enforce housing standards and tenant safety.
- Promote workplace and public health and safety.
- Lead emergency planning and civil contingency efforts.
