Fair Tax Declaration

Norwich City Council is committed to fairness and transparency in everything we do. That’s why we’re taking a stand for responsible tax practices - setting an example for our community and the businesses we work with.

Norwich City Council: proud to support Fair Tax

At Norwich City Council, we believe everyone should pay their fair share of tax. That’s why we’ve signed up to the Fair Tax Foundation’s “Councils for Fair Tax Declaration.” This is our promise to lead by example and support responsible tax practices in everything we do.

What does this mean for Norwich?

  • Leading by Example: we make sure our own tax affairs are open, honest, and fair. This includes making sure our contractors pay the right amount of tax and don’t use loopholes to avoid their responsibilities.
  • No Tax Dodging: we don’t use offshore companies or complicated structures just to avoid paying tax or business rates.
  • Transparency: we ask our suppliers to be clear about who owns them and how much profit they make, so we know we’re working with responsible businesses.
  • Celebrating Good Practice: we encourage businesses in Norwich to get the Fair Tax Mark - a sign they pay the right amount of tax, at the right time, in the right place.
  • Speaking Up for Change: we’ve written to the government to ask for stronger rules, so councils like ours can reward good tax conduct and take action against poor practice.
  • Supporting Fair Tax Week: every year, we join in with Fair Tax Week to celebrate businesses that do the right thing and highlight why paying tax matters.

Why is this important?

Tax pays for the things we all rely on - like schools, roads, and public services. When everyone pays their fair share, our whole community benefits. Sadly, research shows that billions of pounds are lost each year because some companies use tax havens or shift profits overseas. We want to help change that.

Our commitment

By signing the Fair Tax Declaration, Norwich City Council is standing up for fairness, equality, and social justice. We’re proud to be part of a growing movement of councils across the UK who are making tax fairer for everyone.
