What is Housing Benefit?
Housing Benefit helps cover your rent if you’re on a low income.
The amount you get depends on:
- your income and savings
- who lives with you
- your family situation
- any other benefits you receive.
You can use a benefits calculator to check what you might get and see if you qualify for other support.
Who can apply?
You can apply for Housing Benefit if:
- you’ve reached state pension age
- you live in supported or sheltered housing
- you’ve been placed in temporary accommodation.
If you’re eligible for Housing Benefit
You might also be able to claim Council Tax Reduction at the same time.
What you’ll need
- you’ll need to provide evidence (like proof of income or rent)
- you can upload this when you apply or send it later — don’t delay your application
- once we have everything, we’ll write to you with our decision
If you don’t agree with it, you can appeal.
