Food hygiene rating scheme

Check your rating and inspection reports, see how to appeal your rating, request a rerating and right to reply.

The food hygiene rating scheme helps customers choose places with good hygiene, like restaurants, cafés, takeaways, pubs and supermarkets.

Your hygiene rating

After an unannounced inspection, your business will get a rating from 0 to 5:

  • 5 – Very good
  • 4 – Good
  • 3 – Satisfactory
  • 2 – Needs improvement
  • 1 – Major improvement needed
  • 0 – Urgent improvement needed

Note: This rating is about hygiene, not food quality.

How your rating is decided

Inspectors look at:

  • how food is handled and stored
  • cleanliness and condition of the premises
  • how you manage food safety

You’ll get a report explaining any issues and how to improve. You’ll also receive a sticker to display your rating.
