Ending your tenancy

If you're planning to end your tenancy it's important to follow the correct steps. See everything you need to do - from giving notice to handing back your keys - in a clear, step-by-step format.

Step 1: give notice

  • When you're preparing to move out, fill out a Notice to Quit form - there is a different one for ending your garage tenancy
  • submit it to us
  • your housing tenancy will end four weeks from the date we receive your notice, starting from the following Monday. For garage tenancies, the notice period is one week.

Step 2: prepare to leave

  • arrange pre-leave inspection by calling us on 0344 980 3333.
  • remove all your belongings
  • clean the property
  • return all keys by the end date to avoid charges.

Step 3: understand the commitment

  • once you give notice, you can’t cancel it
  • If you’re unsure, get advice before submitting the form.

Step 5: allow access

  • The council may need to inspect or show the property during your notice period.
