Keeping pets in council homes, council-owned buildings and communal spaces

How we support responsible pet ownership while ensuring our homes and communal spaces remain safe, clean, and comfortable for everyone.

Pets in your council home

Most council tenants can keep pets in their home. In some types of accommodation, including tower blocks, you will need permission before getting a pet.

As a pet owner, you are responsible for making sure your pet is well cared for and does not cause nuisance, damage or safety concerns for other residents.

Read our Pet Ownership Policy to find out:

  • whether you need permission
  • which pets are allowed
  • your responsibilities as a pet owner
  • how to apply for permission if required
  • what happens if the policy is not followed
