Understanding your district heating charge

We know that managing household expenses is important, especially when it comes to energy. That’s why we’ve designed a straightforward approach to heating costs - one that offers consistency, clarity, and peace of mind throughout the year.

To help make energy costs more manageable, your district heating charge is set as a fixed weekly amount spread evenly across 50 weeks of the year. This means:

  • You pay the same amount each week, regardless of the season.
  • It smooths out the higher costs of winter heating with the lower usage in warmer months.
  • You won’t face sudden spikes in your bill during colder periods - giving you predictable and stable costs all year round.

How the heating system works

Our district heating network supplies reliable, efficient heating to multiple homes across several sites. These sites are powered by a mix of energy sources - including gas, electricity, oil, and heat pumps - all managed through communal boiler rooms.

Because the system operates collectively:

  • We don’t receive individual energy bills for each property.
  • Instead, we manage contracts that cover the entire network.

Why costs have changed

Over the past two years, energy prices across the UK have risen sharply due to global issues like supply disruptions and increased wholesale costs. While prices are starting to settle, they’re still much higher than before.

As a result, the council has had to pass on part of these increased costs to tenants. We understand this may be worrying, and we want to reassure you:

  • We’re committed to keeping costs fair and transparent.
  • We regularly review energy usage and pricing to ensure charges stay reasonable.
  • We’re actively working to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • We’ll keep you informed and offer support whenever needed.
