Supplier alert: Fraudulent purchase order scam
Norwich City Council has become aware of a scam whereby suppliers are contacted with an illegitimate purchase order, which purports to come from the council. The documentation will have branding similar to Norwich City Council and potentially other details that are readily available from the public information on the council’s website.
Please be extra vigilant about the details of any enquiries or purchase orders received from Norwich City Council and, if in any doubt, make contact with your existing lead contact within the council to verify whether the contact is genuine or email procurement@norwich.gov.uk.
Some simple checks would include:
- Does the contact come from norwich.gov.uk? Anything else will not be from the council.
- Are the goods or services to be provided to a known Norwich City Council address?
- Is the contact named known to you as someone who has commissioned such goods or services previously?
We advise all suppliers to consult with their own IT or cyber security advisors to ensure they remain vigilant and informed on how to identify suspicious communications.
Norwich City Council has reported all known instances of this fraudulent behaviour onto the national portal. We would advise suppliers to make their own reports to Action Fraud.
