Apply for a taxi or private hire vehicle licence

If you own or drive a taxi (hackney carriage) or private hire vehicle in Norwich, you need a vehicle licence. You also need a driver licence.

Before you apply

Make sure your vehicle meets these rules:

  • first-time applications: your vehicle must be less than 5 years old (from its first DVLA registration).
  • vehicle checks:
    • if your vehicle is under 10 years old, it needs a check once a year.
    • if it’s 10 years or older, it must be checked every 6 months.
  • timing: your vehicle inspection must be done within 6 weeks before you apply.

Documents you need to upload

  • V5 registration certificate
  • insurance (must cover taxi or private hire use)
  • MOT certificate (if needed)
  • vehicle inspection sheet
  • meter test certificate (for taxis only)
  • LOLER certificate (if needed)

How to apply

  • upload your documents and pay the fee
  • applications are processed in the order they’re received
  • it may take up to 6 weeks to process your application
