A rich history of service

The tradition dates back to 1403, when King Henry IV granted Norwich the right to appoint a Mayor and Sheriff. The Lord Mayor’s unique privilege to carry a sword and silver maces—even in the presence of the monarch—is a rare honour, symbolising the city's historic status.

In 1909, King Edward VII elevated the title to Lord Mayor, a distinction confirmed in 1974. The Sheriff’s role, once focused on law and tax collection, is now purely ceremonial - yet still a vital part of Norwich’s civic identity.

Supporting local causes

Each year, the Lord Mayor and Sheriff select a civic charity to support, raising awareness and funds through their public engagements. From poetry competitions to remembrance services, their calendar is filled with meaningful moments that connect Norwich’s past, present, and future.

For 2025-26, Lord Mayor Cllr Paul Kendrick and Stuart Wright have chosen to support Norfolk and Waveney Mind as their civic charity appeal.
