On 22 November 2018, Norwich took an exciting step toward its future. Around 160 representatives from local businesses, community groups, and organisations came together for a special conference to launch the Norwich 2040 City Vision - a shared roadmap for what we want our city to become by 2040.
Delegates heard inspiring talks from leaders including Councillor Alan Waters, Leader of Norwich City Council, and Jasmine Mickleburgh, Chair of the Norwich Youth Advisory Board.
They highlighted the progress already underway and issued a powerful call to action: let’s work together to shape the Norwich we all want to see in 2040.
Vision conference highlights
Introducing the Norwich 2040 Vision
Laura McGillivray from Norwich City Council unveiled the city’s bold vision for the future, built on five key themes:
- Fair – A city where everyone has equal opportunities
- Creative – A hub of innovation and culture
- Connected – Strong links within the community and beyond
- Liveable – A healthy, sustainable place to call home
- Dynamic – Thriving, adaptable, and forward-thinking
These themes were shaped through extensive public engagement, ensuring the vision reflects the aspirations of the whole community.

Our inclusive economy: more opportunities for more people
Adam Clark from Norwich City Council explored what makes Norwich strong:
- Leading universities
- Thriving sectors
- Real growth potential
But he also highlighted the challenges:
- Low wages
- Inequality across communities
His message? Through collaboration and big ideas, we can build an economy that works for everyone.

Representatives from CreateNorwich and Norwich Freeman’s Charity shared how they’re working with secondary schools to capture young people’s bold and optimistic ideas for the future of Norwich.

Transport for Norwich – transforming cities
Imagine a city where:
- Walking and cycling are easy and enjoyable
- Public transport is clean, affordable, integrated, and smart-ticketed
Jeremy Wiggin (Norfolk County Council) and Joanne Deverick (Norwich City Council) shared how Norwich could achieve this future with a share of the £1.2 billion Transforming Cities fund.

Working together for life - changing, socially just services
Dr. Jan Sheldon from St Martins showcased the incredible work being done to help people access safe, affordable, quality housing through the Greater Norwich Homelessness Strategy (2015–2020).
She also highlighted the wide range of support available in Norwich, including the innovative Pathways outreach service.

Caroline Mayers from Norwich BID showcased the amazing things Norwich has to offer and shared ideas on how we can refresh the city’s brand.
