If you're a licensed taxi driver, operator, or vehicle owner in Norwich, it's important to keep your licences up to date. This guide breaks down what you need to know to renew each type of licence.

1. Operator licence (private hire)

Key points:

  • You must renew before your current licence expires to keep operating.
  • Licence lasts 5 years.
  • You’ll need:
    • £870 fee
    • Tax check code from HMRC
    • Proof of right to work in the UK
  • The council will check if your premises are suitable for operating.
  • You must notify the council of any changes to your details

2. Vehicle licence (hackney carriage or private hire)

Key points:

  • Renew before expiry to keep driving.
  • Licence is valid for 1 year.
  • Vehicle checks:
    • Under 10 years old: yearly inspection
    • 10 years or older: every 6 months
    • Inspection must be done within 6 weeks of renewal date
  • You’ll need to upload:
    • V5 registration certificate
    • Insurance
    • MOT certificate (if applicable)
    • Vehicle inspection sheet
    • Meter test certificate (hackney carriages only)
    • LOLER certificate (if applicable)
  • If your licence has expired, you must apply as if it's a new licence

3. Driver licence

Key points:

  • Renew before expiry to continue driving.
  • Allow at least 6 weeks for processing.
  • You’ll need:
    • Tax check code from HMRC
    • Medical certificate (completed by your GP)
    • Passport-style photo
    • DVLA licence showing current address
    • Two forms of ID (e.g. passport + utility bill)
    • Enhanced DBS check (via Taxi Plus)
    • Proof of National Insurance number
  • Initial fees:
    • Hackney carriage: £275
    • Private hire: £218
  • If your licence expires, you must apply as a new driver
