What you need to know
- Renew before your licence expires – this keeps you legally on the road while your new licence is being processed.
- Allow at least 6 weeks for your application to be reviewed.
- You must already hold a driver licence from Norwich City Council to renew a vehicle licence.
Vehicle checks
- Under 10 years old: needs a check once a year.
- 10 years or older: needs a check every 6 months.
- Important: Your inspection must be done within 6 weeks of your renewal date.
Documents you’ll need to upload
Make sure you have digital copies of these ready:
- V5 registration certificate
- Insurance (must cover private or public hire)
- MOT certificate (if applicable)
- Vehicle inspection sheet
- Meter test certificate (for taxis only)
- LOLER certificate (if applicable)

You will need to upload your documents and pay the fee:
- Hackney carriage: £165
- Private hire: £128.50
Renew vehicle licence now
If your licence has already expired, you’ll need to apply for a new licence.
Vehicle plates and stickers
Once your renewal has been approved, your vehicle plates and stickers will be sent directly to your home address. You'll receive a tracking number to track the delivery.
