Renew a taxi or private hire vehicle licence

If you drive a licensed taxi (hackney carriage) or private hire vehicle in Norwich, you must renew your vehicle licence every year.

What you need to know

  • Renew before your licence expires – this keeps you legally on the road while your new licence is being processed.
  • Allow at least 6 weeks for your application to be reviewed.
  • You must already hold a driver licence from Norwich City Council to renew a vehicle licence.

Vehicle checks

  • Under 10 years old: needs a check once a year.
  • 10 years or older: needs a check every 6 months.
  • Important: Your inspection must be done within 6 weeks of your renewal date.

Documents you’ll need to upload

Make sure you have digital copies of these ready:

  • V5 registration certificate
  • Insurance (must cover private or public hire)
  • MOT certificate (if applicable)
  • Vehicle inspection sheet
  • Meter test certificate (for taxis only)
  • LOLER certificate (if applicable)
