How to vote in person at an election

Planning to vote in person at the next election? This guide walks you through everything you need to know - from what to bring, where to go, and how the process works - so you can cast your vote with confidence.

Voting in person is a straightforward and secure way to have your say in local and national elections. Here's everything you need to know to cast your vote at a polling station in Norwich.

Before you go - what you’ll need

Photo ID is now required to vote in person. Accepted forms include:

  • UK passport or driving licence (including provisional)
  • Blue Badge
  • Older Person’s Bus Pass
  • PASS card (Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
  • for a full list of accepted ID, visit the Electoral Commission website.

Your poll card (sent by post before the election) is helpful but not essential. It tells you where your polling station is.

Finding your polling station

Your designated polling station will be listed on your poll card.

You can also find it online using the polling station finder.

Polling stations are usually located in community centres, schools, or local halls.

When to vote

  • Polling stations are open from 7:00am to 10:00pm on election day.
  • You can vote at any time during these hours, but we recommend avoiding peak times (before work and after 5 PM) if you prefer a quieter experience.

What happens at the polling station

  1. Arrive at your polling station and join the queue if there is one.
  2. Show your photo ID to the staff at the desk.
  3. Confirm your name and address (you don’t need your poll card, but it helps).
  4. Receive your ballot paper.
  5. Go to a private booth, mark your vote with a cross (X), and fold the paper.
  6. Post your ballot into the sealed ballot box.

Accessibility and support

  • All polling stations are equipped with ramps, large print guides, and tactile voting devices.
  • Staff are trained to assist voters with disabilities or additional needs.
  • You may bring someone with you to help, or ask a member of staff for assistance.
