Do your bit to keep our city tidy and beautiful

Whether you're a resident, a business, or just work in our great city, there's plenty you can do to support our aims to help keep Norwich clean. Find out more here.

As a Norwich resident

  • don’t use full bins. If a bin is already full, please don’t add more rubbish. Try the next bin or take your rubbish home.
  • don’t dump rubbish. Putting big items like furniture or extra bags in shared bin areas is called fly-tipping. It’s against the law and you could get a big fine or even go to jail. Make use of our bulky waste collection service instead
  • use the right bins:
Black bins – for bagged household rubbish
Blue bins – for recycling (put it in loose, not in bags)
Food waste bins - Only food waste (cooked and uncooked), no packing materials
  • Do report problems. If you see dumped rubbish or graffiti on public land, tell the council. We clean up most fly-tipping within 24 hours. This helps us find out where it happens most so we can do something about it.

Want to help more?

You can organise a community litter pick! The council can give you tools and collect the rubbish you pick up.

As a Norwich business

  • your businesses has a legal ‘duty of care’ to store and dispose of waste safely, find up to date information, links, hints, and tips for your business waste here.
  • put your waste out at the right times. Only put your trade waste (like bags, bins, or pallets) outside during the set times in the morning and evening. This keeps the streets tidy during the day.
  • don’t use public bins for business waste. Every business must have its own trade waste collection. Please don’t put business rubbish in the street litter bins.

Need more bins?

  • if your business needs extra bins, you should contact your current waste management company who can help.
  • keep your area clean. Make sure the space outside your shop or business is always clean and tidy.

If you work in Norwich

Lots of businesses in Norwich take part in fun litter-picking days. Why not ask your boss if your workplace can join in too? We can lend you the tools you need and will collect the rubbish afterwards.

You can also help the planet in small ways every day:

  • bring your own water bottle or reusable coffee cup to work. This means less rubbish in the bins and less harm to the environment
  • if you buy lunch from a café, restaurant or market stall, please recycle what you can. Only use bins that aren’t already full.
