Discover nature reserves - Bowthorpe Marsh

Bowthorpe Marsh

A hidden gem of the Yare Valley

Nestled beside the gentle curves of the River Yare, Bowthorpe Marsh is a 5.7-hectare haven of wild beauty and quiet charm. This low-lying landscape of tall-herb fen and lush, unimproved grassland is alive with the sights and sounds of nature - changing with the seasons and teeming with life.

A network of winding drainage ditches crisscrosses the site, their banks lined with reed sweet-grass and other aquatic plants. In wetter months, a small seasonal pond appears, attracting birds and amphibians alike. The higher western ground supports species-rich neutral grassland, while a small fenced patch in the northwest corner holds more modest, semi-improved grassland.

Scattered patches of blackthorn scrub add texture and shelter for wildlife, and throughout the year, horses graze the marsh, helping to maintain its delicate balance.

Wildlife and flora

Expect to see a variety of classic marshland flora and perhaps catch glimpses of dragonflies skimming the water or warblers calling from the reeds. While not a botanical hotspot, the site’s natural character and subtle diversity make it a peaceful retreat for nature lovers.

Access and connections

Bowthorpe Marsh is a well-loved stop along the Yare Valley Walk, offering rustic wooden bridges over dykes and scenic views across the grazing marshes. It connects seamlessly with Earlham Marsh and Bowthorpe Southern Park, forming part of a larger green corridor. Do note: in wet weather, parts of the site may become muddy or inaccessible - sturdy boots recommended!
