Nestled on the site of a former chalk mine, Danby Wood is a compact yet enchanting 3.4-hectare broadleaved woodland that offers a rich tapestry of nature and history. Its undulating terrain - shaped by old mining activity - features banks, hills, and hollows that make every walk a little adventure.
The woodland is home to a diverse mix of trees including oak, ash, lime, and sycamore, with two striking walnut trees adding a unique touch. Beneath the canopy, the under-storey flourishes with young sycamore, elm, and ash, creating a layered and vibrant ecosystem.
In spring, the forest floor comes alive with snowdrops, followed by a carpet of bluebells and the distinctive Arum lily (Lords and Ladies)—a seasonal spectacle that draws nature lovers and photographers alike.
Danby Wood is a haven for woodland birds, with jays among the many species that can be spotted flitting through the trees.
A way-marked trail guides visitors through the heart of the wood, while informal paths invite exploration. Its proximity to Marston Marshes makes it a popular choice for walkers looking to extend their journey into a longer, scenic loop.
