Nestled across 9.2 hectares of serene woodland, Lion Wood is a captivating natural retreat brimming with character and biodiversity. Towering mature sycamores and oaks dominate the landscape, their broad canopies sheltering a rich mix of other tree species including chestnut, beech, hornbeam, and birch. This diverse age structure creates a dynamic and layered forest experience.
Beneath the canopy, the shrub layer adds texture and color, with holly and elder scattered throughout, and a patch of cherry laurel adding a splash of evergreen charm. While the ground flora is modest, visitors in spring may be delighted by pockets of localised bluebells, adding a magical touch to the forest floor.
Parts of Lion Wood are believed to be ancient woodland, offering a glimpse into centuries of natural history and ecological continuity.
Lion Wood is alive with the sounds and sights of woodland birds. Keep an eye out for the vibrant flash of jays and the unmistakable call of green woodpeckers. Though elusive, bats are likely to be present, flitting through the dusk skies. Grey squirrels are frequent visitors, adding playful energy to the treetops.
The wood is easily accessible via a main path, which serves both as a popular shortcut and a well-trodden route for walkers. A network of informal tracks and steps invites exploration, whether you're seeking a peaceful stroll or a spontaneous adventure.
