Council Tax
When you move into accommodation in Norwich, you must register your household for Council Tax purposes, even if you expect not to pay anything. If you are a full‑time student and believe you are exempt, you will need to provide evidence from your place of study. This must be an official certificate confirming your full‑time student status before the council can remove any charges.
If you don’t register with the council and provide your student exemption certificate, you could be charged Council Tax and may receive charges or collection notices.
A few more things to get set up
-
You may need a parking permit, as many streets near the city centre are permit‑only or part of Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs). Check whether your address is eligible for a permit—parking without one can lead to fines. -
You can register to vote at your home and term time address if they are in different council areas.
You can vote at both addresses in local elections, but only one in a general election. -
Check your bin collection day and where to leave your bins.
Learn what goes in each bin — general waste, recycling, food waste and garden waste.
